There is no greater challenge than chasing a record said to be impossible, nor more rewarding when it is achieved. It has been a long but encouraging journey to put this event together, from its beginnings as idle discussion over a post-race dinner to realising it with the world’s best athletes about to take the stage in a battle of body, mind, and soul to set a new benchmark for what is humanly possible.
This ground-breaking event is driven by the Pho3nix Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation established by my good friend Sebastian Kulczyk that supports sport participation among young people. Its programs introduce children to sport and an active lifestyle, create pathways for athletes to pursue professional sport, and support athletes reaching for the pinnacle of their careers and challenging their potential, inspiring and sowing the seeds for the next generation of young, talented stars to come through.
While triathlon was built on mass participation, we saw a need to add some depth to the opportunities for the top echelon of professional athletes who dedicate themselves full time to competing at this level. We need to keep creating new and innovative ways to evolve our sport, and delivering it to a wider audience in a consumable way.
The Sub7 and Sub8 Project shines a spotlight on this sport and its athletes who I believe are not only the best in triathlon, but among the best athletes in the world. The fact that they have even undertaken a feat of this magnitude is an example to humankind that all goals are worth chasing.
